Rejoice! The all-new Honda City has arrived. Prices start at Rs 10.9 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 14.65 lakh. Bookings for the sedan opened officially last month, a week after Honda revealed details about the fifth-gen model. It is available in three trim levels, covering two engine and as many transmission options. And yes, the new version will be sold alongside the old-gen City. Why? Honda wants to cater to a broader audience with the City marque. Here’s how the complete price list looks like for the new City:

For the record, the fourth-gen City costs between Rs 9.91 lakh and Rs 14.31 lakh, excluding taxes. Some might wonder what does the fifth-gen model offer over the older one. One, it offers a lot more room for people, even though it has the same wheelbase as before. Two, the new City has a more extensive list of creature comforts. And three, it gives you the option of a diesel engine and the old one doesn’t.

The new City is available with two 1.5-litre engines, one petrol and diesel each. The modified petrol powerplant produces 119bhp/145Nm, which means it offers just 1bhp more than before. You can have it with either a 7-step CVT (claimed mileage: 17.8kmpl) or a 6-speed manual transmission (claimed mileage: 18.4kmpl). The diesel engine, on the other hand, remains pretty much the same as before, albeit for a few changes to meet the stricter BS6 (Bharat Stage 6) emission norms. As before, it pumps out 98bhp/200Nm and is only available with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Honda says that the diesel-MT combo can return up to 24.1kmpl.

In the features department, the Honda City offers a lot more than its previous self. The list includes an upgraded Honda Connect system which offers over thirty connected-car features, Alexa remote capability, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ambient lighting and electric sunroof. The sedan also comes with three-point seat belts for all passengers, Hill Start Assist, lane-watch camera, six airbags, cruise control and auto headlamps & wipers.

When you compare the prices of the new City with its rivals, a straightforward fact shines through – the Honda is a tad too expensive. In India, it rivals the Hyundai Verna (Rs 9.31 – 15.1 lakh), Volkswagen Vento (Rs 8.865 – 11.99 lakh), Skoda Rapid (Rs 7.49 – 11.79 lakh), Maruti Suzuki Ciaz (Rs 8.32 – 11.1 lakh) and the Toyota Yaris (Rs 8.86 – Rs 14.3 lakh). Apart from the City and the Verna, all others come with petrol engines only. The Rapid is also due to receive the option of an automatic transmission later this year.

With all those facts and figures out in the open, which one would you choose?
