After what felt like a long wait, Maserati has finally unwrapped its brand-new flagship model – the MC20. Now, that isn’t just a random alphanumeric code. MC stands for Maserati Corse and 20 for the year 2020. As per the company, the super sports car symbolises the beginning of a new era. That’s why the unveiling event was aptly named – MMXX (2020): Time to be audacious.

The MC20 has a beautifully-balanced design, both inside and out. The mid-engined two-seater flaunts butterfly doors and 20-inch wheels with the brand’s Trident design. At the back, there’s no ugly spoiler spoiling the car’s slippery look. But, the rear window does feature an abstract design of the Maserati’s logo. Maserati has also kept the overall weight of the car less than 1.5 tonnes and packed it with clever aerodynamics. Indoors, Maserati has kept a neat layout. The low-slung centre console, for instance, has one knob for drive mode select and two buttons for the gearbox. Also, there are two 10-inch displays (one each for the instrument cluster and infotainment purposes) and a sporty multifunction steering wheel.

Riding behind the seats is a brand-new, 100 per cent Maserati engine. Dubbed as Nettuno, it has a 3.0-litre V6 configuration. But, for the extra output, there are two turbochargers in the equation as well. Coupled to the powerplant is an 8-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission which feeds the oomph to the rear wheels. What oomph? A maximum of 621bhp/730Nm, which is enough for a 0-100kmph sprint time of under 2.9 seconds and a top speed of over 325kmph.

One of the standout creature comforts in the MC20 is Maserati’s Connect program. It offers a bunch of services such as navigation, Amazon Alexa support and an onboard WiFi hotspot. Maserati has also developed six new colours for the MC20 – Bianco Audace, Giallo Genio, Rosso Vincente, Blu Infinito, Nero Enigma and Grigio Mistero.

Maserati will build the MC20 in the same plant as it does other models. The new production line came up in the same space where the GranTurismo and GranCabrio models were made until November of last year. The company says that it took 24 months to design and produce the MC20. In the future, the coupe will get company from convertible and pure-electric versions.

A car nutter by heart. A hopeless engineer by education. Gunning for one goal - simplify cars.
