Saar: The new engine option is the same 1.4-litre diesel that also does duty in the Hyundai Elite i20.

The Hyundai Verna has always been one of the best overall packages in its segment. It is well built, offers a lot of kit and has the most powerful diesel and petrol engines amongst its rivals. However, Hyundai doesn’t want to leave any stone unturned with the Verna. Hence, in a bid to realign Verna’s package with that of the consumer’s demands, Hyundai has silently rejigged the sedan’s portfolio.

The rejigging procedure began with Hyundai adding a fourth engine option. It is a 1.4-litre diesel mill that produces 90PS/220Nm and comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Hyundai fans will immediately tell you that it is the same engine-transmission combination that the South Korean carmaker offers with the Hyundai Elite i20 also. In the Hyundai Verna, the aforementioned powertrain is available in two trims – E and EX. While the former is priced at Rs 9.29 lakh, the latter will cost you Rs 9.99 lakh.

Earlier, the Hyundai Verna was available with a 6-speed automatic transmission in the EX and SX (O) trims of the 1.6-litre petrol, and EX and SX+ trims of the 1.6-litre diesel. Now though, the automatic transmission is no longer available in the EX trim. Instead, Hyundai will offer it with the 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines in SX+ and SX (O) trims respectively. While the petrol-AT SX+ is priced at Rs 11.52 lakh, the diesel-AT SX (O) wears a price tag of Rs 14 lakh and becomes the most expensive variant in the Hyundai Verna’s line-up.

On Hyundai India’s website, you will still find the prices of the variants which aren’t part of Verna’s latest brochure. Those will soon be delisted as soon as Hyundai is done retailing them out. In India, the Hyundai Verna competes with the likes of the Toyota Yaris, Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Skoda Rapid and the Volkswagen Vento. In September 2018, Hyundai introduced a limited-run Anniversary Edition of the Verna.

Note: All prices mentioned above are ex-showroom Delhi.
