Okay. Allow us to start this one with an apology. Earlier today, we reported that Toyota had increased the prices of the Fortuner by up to Rs 48,000. If we could’ve just dug deep enough, we would have found that the Japanese carmaker has increased prices for three other models. Well, without further ado, here it is – the Glanza, Yaris and the Innova have gotten costlier. Here’s how their new prices look like against their previous ones:

Yes, that’s just too many numbers. Here’s the crux of the matter – the Innova range now costs between Rs 25,000 and Rs 61,000 more, depending on the variant. Similarly, the Yaris’ upward price revision has made it between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1.68 lakh dearer, which is incredibly weird. Lastly, Glanza. Toyota’s least expensive model now costs between Rs 3,100 and Rs 25,900 more than what it did a few weeks ago.

So, what’s the reason behind these price revisions? The simple answer is that Toyota has decided to pass on more of the costs to customers. As things stand, there are no mechanical or feature changes to report in any of the models. All three received their BS6 (Bharat Stage 6) compliance before India went under complete lockdown.

In India, the Toyota Glanza competes with the Volkswagen Polo, Tata Altroz, Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz and its twin – the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. As for the Jazz, that is yet to receive a BS6 price list. And Hyundai plans to rejig the forces in the premium hatchback space with the introduction of all all-new Elite i20 later this year.

The Yaris is a direct rival to the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Skoda Rapid, Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the Volkswagen Vento. Out of the lot, only the City and Verna have diesel engine options. And as for the Innova, it doesn’t have a direct rival just yet. Some might point at the Mahindra Marazzo, but that costs way less than the Toyota. Later in the year, however, MG Motor India will have a seven-seater on offer – the Hector Plus. That might just take a swing at the Innova. What do you think?
