After several delays, for apparent reasons, Jaguar introduced the I-Pace in India in March this year. Now, the carmaker is gearing itself up to launch a new variant of the EV. It’s called the I-Pace Black, and you can book one right away. Prices aren’t out yet. Expect that to happen sometime next month.

The I-Pace Black made a global debut in April 2021. And since the car in question comes to India as a direct import, most of the stuff will be carried over from the international-spec version. To justify the “Black” tag, Jaguar has garnished the I-Pace with 19-inch gloss dark grey wheels. Besides that, the OVRM caps, grille, grille surround, window surrounds, and rear badges are all finished in gloss black. Indoors, there are Ebony leather sports seats and headliner and gloss black trim pieces. Also, there are new metallic paints available – Aruba and Farallon Pearl Black. In essence, Jaguar has equipped the I-Pace with the optional Black Pack.

As you’d expect, there are no changes to the powertrain. So, the oomph comes from two electric motors, jointly producing 395bhp/696Nm. That’s enough for a 0-100kmph sprint time of 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 200kmph. The electric motors draw their juices from a 90kWh lithium-ion battery which, as per WLTP, can deliver a range of up to 470km on a single charge.

The I-Pace supports slow as well as fast charging. For example, plug it with an 11kW charger, and the battery will take 8.5 hours to replenish completely. The other option is DC fast charging. For instance, the car can gain 63km of range if plugged into a 50kW feed for 15 minutes. Or, find a 100kW charger and double the range over the same period.

In all likelihood, the I-Pace Black will be based on the HSE variant. That means an extensive list of features, including Matrix LED headlamps, dynamic indicators, gesture-controlled tailgate opening, a head-up display, and adaptive cruise control. In addition, stuff like 16-way powered, heated, cooled front seats with memory function, Meridian 3D surround sound system, Touch Pro Duo, and connected-car tech are also part of the package.

The Jaguar I-Pace currently costs between Rs 1.06 crore and Rs 1.12 crore. The Black variant is likely to become the new range-topper. In India, the I-Pace competes with the Audi e-tron and the Mercedes EQC.
