In BMW’s dictionary, Gran Coupe means a four-door version of a two-door coupe. The BMW 8 Series is a classic case in point. In India, you can have it in a two-door coupe form (M8) and also in a four-door derivative (Gran Coupe). But the 8 Series isn’t for everyone. Not many can shed Rs 1.3 crore (at least) on a car. So, to cater to customers at the other end of the scale, BMW has decided to introduce the 2 Series moniker in a Gran Coupe form. In other words, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. It will launch on October 15, 2020. For now, the company has started accepting bookings for the upcoming model. The minimum token amount is Rs 50,000.

Sport Line

M Sport

Before getting to the technical stuff, here’s something BMW India is offering with all pre-bookings before the launch date. The buyers will get a complimentary Taj Experiences Gift Card worth Rs 50,000. It can be used for multiple transactions, covering stay, holiday packages, dining and spa. And, the customers get to choose from Taj, SeleQtions and Vivanta Hotels and Ama Stays & Trails.

Coming back to the 2 Series Gran Coupe, it will be manufactured in India at BMW India’s Chennai facility. The German carmaker is offering two trim levels for the car – Sport Line and M Sport. Although they will differ on features, both will wear the same ‘220d’ tag. That denotes the presence of a 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel engine producing 188bhp/400Nm, while an 8-speed automatic will handle transmission duties. In this spec, the car can hit 100kmph from nothing in 7.5 seconds and top out at 235kmph.

In the features department, the Sport Line variant will offer stuff like an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with built-in navigation, 17-inch alloy wheels, two-zone climate control, auto-dimming IRVM, rain-sensing wipers and automatic LED-powered headlamps. The M Sport boasts a more aggressive look with a different front bumper and many blacked-out elements. Also, it offers 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch infotainment system, heated front seats and automatic headlamp levelling.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe is BMW’s answer to the upcoming Mercedes-Benz A-Class Limousine. Audi, which earlier offered the A3 sedan in India, has decided to take the SUV route in the same price segment. It has lined-up the Q2, which should receive a price list by the end of the month.
