Colour-Coded Car Stickers – Implemented In Paris

To tackle the problem of air pollution and to bring offenders to justice, vehicles in Delhi will soon colour-coded. What does that mean? Well, a vehicle powered by a diesel engine will have a specific colour-code, whereas a petrol-powered or dual-engine (hybrid) vehicle will each have a different colour allotted. The idea is to make it easy for enforcement agencies to identify what kind of engine does a vehicle have. There is also a proposal to put the manufacturing date of the vehicle on the front windshield, which will help authorities to penalise those which aren’t supposed to ply on the roads of the national capital.

Gadkari Explains Major Pluses Of Alternative Fuels

Delhi, as we know, has been the epicentre of air pollution problems in India. The state government introduced initiatives like the odd-even scheme to control the rising rate of toxicity in the air. Presently, only Delhi has a supply of BS-VI grade of fuel, which is cleaner than BS-IV – the grade is currently available in other parts of the country. The national capital was also the recipient of a specific rule for vehicle usage. That rule stated that diesel vehicles of more than 10 years and petrol ones of more than 15 years of age are not allowed to be on Delhi roads. The renewal of registration of those vehicles has also been stopped as per the court orders.

The centre is yet to give a green light on implementing the colour-coding scheme. It will share its views when the case comes for hearing next week. But if both the proposals are passed, it will make life much easier for the enforcement agencies to stop, check and penalise the violators on the Delhi roads. Last year, the French capital – Paris – introduced its own version of a colour-coded sticker scheme to restrict car usage and curb air pollution.
