Say hello to the production-spec of the Tata Altroz. It made its world premiere at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show. As we are sure most will agree, the Altroz looks interesting at first glance. Some might say a head-turner and some might stop at nice but we feel that the Altroz, no matter where it goes, will grab attention.

Another aspect worth mentioning is that the Altroz will become the second Tata model to flaunt the Impact 2.0 design language. The first was, of course, the Harrier. While the Harrier has big proportions to spread the busy lines and creases all over it, the Altroz looks as if the folks at Tata Motors couldn’t stop designing it. In other words, it is a busy-looking car.

The Altroz is underpinned by Tata Motors’ ALFA-arc (Agile Light Flexible Advanced-Architecture). It is a flexible platform that can support multiple body styles with varied powertrain options such as petrol, diesel, hybrid or pure electric. Tata Motors hasn’t revealed all about the Altroz just yet but it has confirmed some numbers for us to place the car.

The car measures 3,988mm in length, 1,754mm in width, 1,505mm in height and has a wheelbase stretching 2,501mm. Compared to the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the Altroz is 7mm shorter in length, 5mm lower in height and has a wheelbase that’s 19mm less. However, it is 9mm wider. In the engines department, Tata Motors has confirmed just one as of now. It is a 1.2-litre petrol engine which produces 102PS/140Nm and it is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. That’s Baleno RS territory!

As you’d expect, Tata Motors is also tight-lipped about what the Altroz will bring in its list of features. Apart from the dual-tone colour finishes on the outside, the hatchback will also feature dual-headlamp enclosures on either side and a set of funky alloy wheels. Inside, there’s a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, that seems to be lifted directly from the Nexon. The AC vent surrounds are finished in the same colour as the exterior and the multifunction steering has a new design.

Behind the steering wheel, there is a Harrier-like instrument cluster which is split half-and-half between a TFT display and an analogue odometer. Other features include push-button start/stop, cruise control, an 8-speaker sound system, automatic climate control, a rear-view camera, voice control and electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs. Basic safety features such as rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD, dual airbags, seatbelt warning for front two seats and speed alert warning system will be part of the package as well.

Tata Motors will launch the Altroz in mid-2019. That means it is only a few months away to take on the likes of the Honda Jazz, Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai i20 and, of course, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. What are your first impressions of the Altroz? Do let us know in the comments below.
