Saar: The French carmaker revealed the K-ZE concept car, which is based on the Renault Kwid, at the ongoing Paris Motor Show.

Renault isn’t new to the concept of electric vehicles (EVs). It has been selling EVs like the Zoe and Twizy in Europe for a while now. But to create an EV for all kinds of markets, Renault had to think radically. And, the result of that brainstorming has been revealed at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. The French carmaker took the wraps off a concept car called as the Renault K-ZE. It has been designed to be an affordable urban EV and the production version will first launch in China next year.

Renault India fans will immediately tell you that K-ZE looks extremely similar to the Kwid hatchback which is sold in India and several other developing markets around the globe. The Renault K-ZE, essentially, forms the basis of a new global A-segment EV. Renault claims that as per NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) norms, it can travel up to 250km on a single charge and will offer the best autonomy in the segment.

Like most EVs out there, the Renault K-ZE is capable of charging its on-board battery pack at home or at public EV charging points. The concept car comes with a range of creature comforts such as rear parking sensors, rearview camera and an infotainment display with connected navigation and other services.

It is possible that the Renault K-ZE concept car will have other derivatives too. We could very well see Renault equipping the tiny EV with a smaller battery pack. The idea is to make it affordable for markets like India where the move towards EVs is still in a very nascent stage. That said, India will surely become the recipient of one of the Renault K-ZE’s iterations but that is likely to happen in the early part of next decade. By then, India would have received EVs from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota. Not to miss, Mahindra and Tata Motors already have EVs in their portfolio.
