Saar: Apart from cosmetic trickery, the sedan gets a 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

We’ve always maintained that the Nissan Sunny is one of the best value-for-money propositions under the Rs 10 lakh mark. However, it hasn’t faced the kind of success that was originally anticipated. That said, Nissan hasn’t stopped believing in it. Just to spice things up a bit, the Japanese carmaker has launched the Sunny Special Edition in India. Available only in the diesel-manual configuration, it is priced at Rs 8.49 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

So, what has Nissan done to create the Sunny Special Edition? It took the Sunny’s standard XL D variant and garnished it with a black roof wrap, new body decals, black wheel covers and a rear spoiler. Inside the cabin, the sedan gets an all-black interior, black leatherette seat upholstery with red accents and a 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with phone mirroring support. As you can probably guess, the idea was to give the Sunny a sporty makeover. And for all this added kit, the carmaker is asking an additional Rs 10,000. That, in our books, is a fair demand.

Apart from the abovementioned features, the Sunny Special Edition gets all the goodies from the XL D variant. The list includes automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, all four power windows, rear parking sensors, multi-function steering wheel, height adjustable driver’s seat, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist. Nissan has also announced that all variants of the Sunny sedan now come with dual airbags, speed-sensing door lock and seat-belt reminder for the driver.

As far as the engine-transmission combination is concerned, the Sunny Special Edition gets a 1.5-litre diesel mill, coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission. The engine is good for 86PS of power and 200Nm of torque. The claimed mileage figure for this powertrain is 22.71kmpl.

Nissan has already announced that it will be investing heavily in India to carve out space for itself and its subsidiary – Datsun. The company is currently readying the launch of the Kicks SUV, the teaser campaign of which has already started.
