The Maruti Suzuki WagonR is one of the three cars which have clocked over 20 lakh sales in India. Come January 23, 2019, India’s largest carmaker will introduce the all-new WagonR. Compared to the outgoing model, it will be bigger and more feature-rich. The new WagonR will be available with two engine and transmission options each. CNG will also be offered as a factory-fitted option.

In terms of dimensions, the new model is bigger in length and width. In fact, it also has a bigger wheelbase, thanks to a new platform. Thanks to those pluses, the new WagonR will be considerably roomier inside and should have a bigger boot as well. As far as the trim nomenclature goes, it will be the same as every other model which retails from Maruti Suzuki Arena range of showrooms – L, V and Z.

The two engine options will include the same 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine (68PS/90Nm) that powered the outgoing model and the 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol mill from the Maruti Suzuki Ignis. The bigger motor is tuned to produce 83PS/113Nm. Customers will be able to choose either of the engines with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT.

Inside the cabin, the next-gen tallboy will get a new multi-function steering wheel, a compact yet stylish instrument cluster, a touchscreen infotainment system, manual-levelling option for headlamps and height-adjustable driver’s seat among other features. The interior theme, like the outgoing model, gets a dual-tone treatment which should keep the ambience lively.

The new WagonR is an important product for Maruti Suzuki. Apart from being a practical and pocket-friendly hatchback, it is also a favourite of cabbies in the country. Since it will be outshining its predecessor on almost all fronts, it will attract a higher price tag. We expect the range to start around the Rs 4.5 lakh mark and go all the way up to Rs 6 lakh. Once launched, it will compete with the likes of the Tata Tiago, Hyundai Santro, Renault Kwid and the Datsun Go.
