Saar: Even though the new model has a smaller engine compared to its predecessor, it packs more punch.

Mercedes-Benz India has introduced the all-new G-Class in just one variant – G 63 AMG. It is priced at Rs 2.19 crore (ex-showroom India). The German carmaker revealed the Mercedes-AMG G 63 in February this year and put it on sale in international markets about a month later. It is not only bigger and more powerful than its predecessor but also promises to be comfier on the move, safer for the passengers and kinder to the environment.

The new Mercedes-AMG G 63 houses a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine under the bonnet. It produces 585PS of power and 850Nm of torque. Compared to the old model, which had a 5.5-litre, twin-turbo V8, the new one has a smaller engine and yet produces 41PS/90Nm more oomph. The new model gets a 9-speed AMG-spec automatic transmission, which transfers the power to the road via a rear-biased (40:60) 4MATIC four-wheel-drive system.

Although the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 weighs nearly 2.5 tonnes, it can hit 100kmph from a standstill in just 4.5 seconds. The top speed of 220kmph is governed by electronic nannies. But you can get that increased to 240kmph with the optional AMG Driver’s package. The SUV, just like its predecessors, also features a low-range gearbox which helps it tackle almost all kinds of terrains.

To keep the emissions in check, the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 comes with cylinder deactivation system. Depending on the load, the SUV can turn four out of its eight cylinders off. The system is linked to the transmission driving modes. For instance, if the Comfort mode is selected, the cylinder deactivation system plays its role over a wider range from 1,000 to 3,250rpm.

The new Mercedes-AMG G 63 is 101mm longer, 121mm wider and 40mm taller than before. The increase in dimensions has carved out more legroom, shoulder room and elbow room for the front and rear passengers. And to enhance the comfort of the passengers, the G 63 also comes with AMG ride control suspension.

As far as features are concerned, the new model comes with LED headlights, indicators and taillights with Multibeam LED headlamps optionally available, 21- to 22-inch alloy wheels, MBUX system with two 12.3-inch displays, electrically adjustable seats with massage and climate control functions and an AMG-spec steering wheel. As far as safety tech is concerned, the G 63 comes with Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Brake Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, Attention Assist and Active Distance Assist Distronic.

In India, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 goes up against the likes of the Range Rover Sport SVR and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo. While the Range Rover is priced at Rs 1.97 crore, the Porsche will soon get a new price tag as the all-new Cayenne is launching on October 17, 2018.
