Saar: Unveiled at the Auto Guangzhou 2018, it will become the second product offering from MG Motor in India.

It’s a world premiere! At the Auto Guangzhou 2018, SAIC-owned MG Motor unveiled its first-ever pure-electric vehicle. Called simply as the MG eZS, it is, in essence, a battery-electric version of the standard ZS compact SUV. The emission-free derivative of ZS becomes particularly interesting for us as it will become the second product offering from MG Motor in India. However, that is not likely to happen anytime before the first half of 2020.

In terms of dimensions, the MG eZS measures 4,314mm in length, 1,809mm in width and 1,620mm in height. The eZS gets a wheelbase of 2,585mm, which is 4mm shorter to the conventionally-powered ZS iterations and is offered in two rim and tyre sizes – 205/60 R16 and 215/50 R17. To put things in perspective, the MG eZS falls somewhere in between the Hyundai Creta and the Renault Captur in terms of size.

Behind the scenes, the pure-electric powertrain offers 150PS of power and 350Nm of torque. That’s enough for the SUV to hit 50kmph in 3.1 seconds. MG Motor claims that at a constant speed of 60kmph, the eZS can travel up to 428 kilometres. However, as per the New European Driving Cycle norms, the MG eZS’ travel range is 335 kilometres. Using fast-charging, the on-board battery pack can gain 80 per cent of its juices back in 30 minutes.

As far as the design of the MG eZS goes, it is almost identical to the standard versions of the SUV. The difference in appearance includes an exclusive blue paint for the exterior, eZG badging, a charging port hidden behind the front grille and slightly different alloy wheels. In the equipment list, the MG eZS flaunts a panoramic sunroof, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a flat-bottom multifunction steering wheel and automatic climate control.

Last month, MG Motor detailed its plans for India. The first product from the Chinese-owned British carmaker will be an SUV which is slated to launch in the second half of next year. Within a year’s time, MG Motor India will introduce the MG eZS. To keep the costs in check, the India-spec model will be imported via the CKD (completely knocked down) route. If the model finds good traction amongst Indian customers, the company might even assemble the eZS at its plant in Halol, Gujarat.
