In a press release, R S Kalsi, senior executive director, marketing and sales, MSIL, said:

“Road accidents are the cause of over 1.5 lakh deaths every year in India. Driver fault is seen as a prominent reason for such accidents. As a leader, Maruti Suzuki initiated a structured and contemporary driving skill program in 2005. Based on international best practices this Maruti Driving School initiative has so far trained over 1 million people. We believe that a scientifically designed driving training program will help to make Indian roads safer. Our aim is to continue expanding the Maruti Driving School network and train 1.5 million people on quality driving skills through MDS by 2020.”

The programme of learning to drive is bifurcated into three main sections – theoretical sessions, simulator training and practical training. The classroom theory is based on a scientific and structured curriculum. All the trainers at MDS are trained and certified by MSIL and on a yearly basis, go through refresher courses to ensure they deliver up-to-date training to the students. All MDS are set up by MSIL in partnership with its dealers.

In a bid to make the roads safer for everyone, the Swift-maker also manages seven Institute of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTRs) in collaboration with the state governments. Maruti Suzuki is currently gearing up to launch the mid-life update of the Ciaz in India next month. Later in the year, probably around the festive period, the company will introduce the all-new Ertiga MPV as well.
