Saar: It will land as a reasonably-priced punch in the world of heavyweights such as the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and the Isuzu MU-X.

Have you always wanted to own a big SUV which had seven seats, a good amount of power, a feature-rich cabin and a reasonable price tag? Well, that ideal companion of yours has been in development for a while now and although its underpinnings come from South Korea, it will proudly flaunt the Mahindra badge at the front. The SUV that we are talking about is the one that the homegrown automaker showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. It is, of course, the Y400. You can take a breather here because Y400 is just a codename. Although, it might just be christened as the XUV700.

Mahindra has officially announced that the “Luxury SUV” will launch on November 19, 2018. It will put together at the company’s production facility at Chakan, which is in Maharashtra. Here’s what Ranjan Wadhera, who is the president of the automotive sector at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., had to say about the upcoming model:

“The Y400 is one of the most eagerly anticipated launches of this year. Positioned in the high-end SUV segment, the Y400 is a high-end, full-sized SUV that offers luxury and exclusivity in its tasteful design, lavish interiors, thrilling performance and best in class features. We are sure that it will further enhance our SUV portfolio.”

In order to take the buying and ownership experience a notch or two higher, Mahindra has been busy revamping its existing “World of SUVs” dealerships. The company has created a separate section in its authorised dealerships for retailing high-end products. That’s where the Y400 will find a place and will be presented to the prospect customers using a range of digital technologies.

The Mahindra Y400 is essentially a rebadged version of the SsangYong Rexton, which is sold in South Korea and several other markets around the globe. The SUV has been tinkered with to adapt and suffice the Indian market needs. There are no confirmed set of specifications but it is expected to get its juices from a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel mill with over 180PS of power and around 400Nm of torque. The engine, in the UK market, is offered with 6-speed manual or a Mercedes-Benz-sourced 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. India is likely to get the latter and the powertrain will be BS VI compliant.

No points for guessing, the Mahindra Y400 will be offered with two-wheel- and four-wheel-drive configurations, just like its direct competitors. Speaking of which, the Mahindra model will lock horns with the likes of the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner and the Isuzu MU-X. In terms of pricing, however, the Mahindra is likely to undercut all of them.
