Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) India has announced that it will soon commence introducing electrified vehicles. By the end of 2019, Land Rover hybrid models will go on sale in India. Which ones? All we can say is that presently, only the Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport have plug-in hybrid derivatives in Land Rover’s portfolio. Expect JLR India to introduce both. What about the Jaguar I-Pace? That’s coming too. However, it is expected to have a price tag for India in the second half of next year.

In October 2017, the Range Rover Sport became the first model from JLR to receive a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Only a few days later, the same powertrain was also introduced on the JLR’s flagship SUV – the Range Rover. What’s that powertrain comprised of? A 2.0-litre petrol engine is mated to an electric motor, while transmission duties are handled by an 8-speed automatic. The total system output is rated at 404PS/640Nm. JLR claims an electric-only travel range of 51km and rapid battery charging time of 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Over to the Jaguar I-Pace. It is presently the only pure electric vehicle (EV) under JLR’s umbrella. Behind the pretty exterior is a 90kWh battery pack which powers two electric motors, one for each axle. Each motor is capable of producing 200PS/348Nm. Combined, they make an all-wheel-drive system and have 400PS/696Nm on tap. Those figures are enough for a 0-100kmph time of 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 200kmph.

As far as charging times are concerned, they are directly proportional to the type of electricity feed. For instance, the I-Pace will take 12.9 hours to replenish its battery pack from zero to 100 per cent when attached to a 7kW charger. The same charger will complete the 0-80 per cent journey in 10 hours. However, a 100kW feed can complete the 0-80 per cent charge in just 40 minutes. When fully charged, the Jaguar I-Pace can travel up to 470km.

JLR is currently on a mission to introduce electrified derivatives of all its models by the end of the decade. That means before the end of 2020, all JLR products will have either a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid or a battery-electric powertrain on offer. Some of those electrified models will also come to India. This development comes courtesy of the FAME-II scheme which has gone live in India this month.
