The Ford Mustang needs no introduction. Its name is right at the top amongst the most celebrated motoring icons that ever existed. The Mustang badge has been in existence for more than half a century. In fact, it has just turned 55. Ford celebrates the anniversary as National Mustang Day in its home country – the USA. It sells more Mustangs there than anywhere else in the world.

Speaking of which, the Mustang range bagged 1,13,066 sales worldwide in 2018. That was enough to claim the title of the best-selling sports coupé in the world for the fourth consecutive year. Compared to the sales numbers of 2017, the Mustang’s share in the global sports coupé segment increased half a point and closed at 15.4 per cent. In the USA alone, Ford retailed 75,842 units. That’s a staggering 67 per cent of the global figure. Since 2015, Ford has sold more than 5,00,000 sixth-gen Mustangs worldwide. In 2018, the Mustang was on sale in 146 markets, one of which is India.

Ford sells just one version of the Mustang on our shores – the GT. Launched in 2016, the two-door coupé houses a 5.0-litre V8 under the long bonnet. The engine is good for 401PS/515Nm, all of which is fed to the rear wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission. As far as the list of features is concerned, it includes 19-inch alloys, HID headlamps, auto wipers, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with SYNC3, a 9-speaker sound system with amplifier, dual-zone climate control, electric front seats with cooling and heating functions, LED DRLs and ambient lighting.

At an ex-showroom price of Rs 74.62 lakh, the Ford Mustang is nearly Rs 10 lakh more expensive than what it was back in 2016. That said, it is still a lot of car for that price which also includes import duties applicable to CBUs (completely built units). For the same sort of money, you can purchase a BMW Z4, Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC Coupé and the Audi S5 Sportback.
