Saar: It is now only available with a 1.2-litre petrol engine with manual and automatic transmissions.

Launched in January last year, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis was somewhat of a bold move from the Indo-Japanese carmaker. Unlike any of its previous offerings, the Ignis broke the monotony of conservative styling and instead came up with love or hate looks. Whoever said Maruti Suzuki can’t be bold!

Anyway, the company has now stopped the production of the diesel-fed variants of the Ignis. Reason? Low demand. Up until now, Maruti Suzuki has sold over 72,000 units of the Ignis. During the January-May 2018 period, it retailed over 4,500 units of the Ignis on an average. Maruti Suzuki dealers confirmed that most of the demand for the Ignis comes for petrol variants.

It is simple to see why the diesel-powered variants of Maruti Suzuki Ignis struggled to wow the consumers. Prices for those started at Rs 6.32 lakh and went all the way up to Rs 8.12 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom Delhi).  In the same price range, customers have a lot of choices which offer better value. And we aren’t just talking about the products, which outshine the Ignis purely on value-proposition, from Maruti Suzuki’s own stable. For instance, the ex-showroom price (Delhi) for Maruti Suzuki Dzire ZDi is approximately Rs 6,000 less than the range-topping Ignis diesel-auto. If you had the choice to opt between the two, putting value-for-money above than anything else, you’d go for the sub-4 metre sedan, won’t you?!

Discontinuing the diesel variants for the Ignis will bring some, if not much, relief for Maruti Suzuki’s production lines. Those can be utilised to produce models which have long waiting periods, such as the hot-selling Swift, Vitara Brezza, Dzire and Baleno.

If you still want the Ignis with a diesel powerplant underneath, you might get one from the existing stock. Crucially, don’t forget to haggle for discounts because dealers will want to sell those off as soon as possible to make room for those models which are in demand. If lucky, you might even crack a deal with benefits up to Rs 75,000 on the diesel-fed variants of the Ignis.

For now, Maruti Suzuki will sell the Ignis with only the 1.2-litre petrol engine, which produces 83PS/113Nm. The peppy little engine is available with manual and AMT units. No matter which transmission you choose, the powertrain is efficient enough to return a claimed 20.89kmpl.
