Saar: It is slated to make its global premiere at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show.

This is it. This is how the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury (VMMUL) concept will look like. The company had very carefully released teasers over the last week or so. But then, as is the case with many upcoming cars these days, someone posted these pictures along with some other details online. Sorry Mercedes, but we didn’t do it!

In fact, before today, we didn’t even know what the concept will be called. But thanks to pictures, we do now.  It is officially slated to make its world premiere at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show, which will open its gates from April 25 and shut them on the eve of May 4, 2018. If you have been wondering where have you seen that face before, allow us to help. It looks similar to the Mercedes-Maybach 6 concept that broke cover in 2016.

However, there are differences in form. First up, the VMMUL stands taller thanks to its jacked-up springs and massive tyres. Secondly, the shape is not of a conventional SUV. Instead, it looks like something that was designed to be a high-riding vehicle but was given a sedan silhouette instead. Does this ring any bells? Volvo S60 Cross Country anyone? Sure, the two brands aren’t really on the same level, i.e. Maybach and Volvo, but then adding a lift kit to a sedan is what’s common here.

The VMMUL (apologies for the short form but the name is quite long) is purely a concept, just like the Mercedes-Maybach 6. So, don’t expect Mercedes to put it into production. But what we can take away from this concept is a set of hints for what the future Maybach or even the S-Class models might like from the inside. The cabin is bathed with leather, coupled to casings of extremely shiny metal (looks like copper but since this is Mercedes, it could be a new metal that it invented for the concept!). The blue ambient lighting is unmissable and so is the fact that despite its generous size, it is only a four-seater. The really classy touch though is in the centre console for the rear passengers – a tea set replaces the old-school champagne bar.

What’s powering this behemoth? Well, we believe that if you strip away the body, it is exactly the same as the Mercedes-Maybach 6. That means it will have the same powerplant too. A motor for each wheel, which means all-wheel-drive, collectively producing 748PS of power. The battery pack is likely to be the same too – 80kWh. Top-speed will be electronically limited to 250kmph but it should return over 500km of range on a single charge. There’s no internal combustion engine here. It is a very gaudy, pure electric vehicle.

To get a confirmation on all this, we’ll have to wait for about 4 days from today. We’ll get an answer to whether or not this showpiece is exactly what the leaked information has led us to believe.
